Vitrified timber flooring is also known as vitreous stone. It is made by treating timber with a resin and hardening it under low temperatures. The high-pressure and high temperatures cause the wood to change into a liquid and become highly resistant to moisture, termites and any other stains. It is an excellent alternative to granite and marble flooring. Vitrified timber flooring is primarily used for indoor purposes because of its water and termite resistant properties.

There are four kinds of vitrified tiles – Solid salt, Clairvoyant, double impregnated, and Full body. Solid salt vitrified tiles have a very smooth surface and the color tone changes slowly from dark brown to light brown depending on the mineral content of the tiled surface. Clairvoyant tiling is the most popular type because it is extremely hardwearing and has a naturally mirrored finish. Double impregnated tiles have a semi-smooth surface and the color tone changes more gradually than solid salt. Full body has a high gloss and has been given a mirror like finish to further increase its durability.

The main advantage of vitrified timber flooring is that it is very strong, scratch proof and water resistant. This property makes it ideal for use in areas with high traffic but also low density. It is also low on porosity which makes it an economical choice when compared to other engineered and natural stone tiles. It has a glass-like shine to its gleaming surface which makes it look like genuine wood. Its strength and compatibility with a wide range of flooring materials makes vitrified tiles ideal for a wide variety of settings.

As with all tile options, there are pros and cons associated with using vitrified tiles. The biggest benefit is that vitrified tiles can be used to create any surface including showers, countertops, shower enclosures and even bathroom floors. Their durable quality makes them an ideal solution for high traffic areas. Another great advantage is that they are easy to install. Another major benefit is that these tiles can easily adapt to various environmental conditions due their unique property of mirror like appearance. Even if a floor is kept completely clean it will remain shiny and clean.

Another benefit of choosing vitrified tiles over other ceramic tile options is that they are very low on maintenance. These slabs remain strong and tough for a long period of time because they are made up of a high grade of silica. High temperatures can cause problems for other materials especially silica which would affect the color and the hardness of the tile. In case of cleaning, high temperatures should not be used because the silica may expand and cause damage to the surrounding areas of the floor.

Vitrified ceramic tiles are a superior alternative to vitreous ceramic tiles or vitrified clay tiles. However, they have their own disadvantages. Since vitrified tiles and clay are made from clay, the surface of these tiles tend to get etched when exposed to high temperatures. This may lead to scratching and fading of the tile. So, while they are cost effective, owners should keep proper precautions so as to avoid any damage to the flooring.
