Choosing and Installing a Shower Shelf
August 5, 2021One of the most frequently built accents in a bathroom is the shower shelf. If you haven’t built one yourself, there are several different options available to you in the marketplace today. You can use a piece of plywood as a center piece and build up the rest of the shelves to match or complement the unit.
To build a shower shelf, first you need at minimum 36 inches of solid floor space on all sides, measured along each side. Measure the total height and width of your shelf and then add 8 inches for both the width and the height. Mark the approximate positions of the screws using a stud finder. Use a self-adhesive model of float to mark the screw locations onto the plywood. With a drill, screw the floats securely into the wood. Be sure to use enough wood screws so that water does not enter into the seams of your new shower shelf.
Another popular option for shower shelves is to install either suction shower shelves or suction cup shower shelves. Suction shower shelves are installed simply by screwing them into the walls and securing them with bolts or screws. The suction shower shelves usually have suction cups glued to the top and sides of the shelves. Suction shower shelves are often available in various sizes so that you can purchase according to the size of your bathtub or shower. Sufficient length of suction shower shelves will help keep your bathing suit out of the way when they are not being used.
Surgical stainless steel is an excellent material to use for your storage needs. It is very durable, which means it will be able to withstand many years of constant use. This type of storage chest will also save you money because it will not require replacement as often as other types of storage chest. If you decide to go with a surgical stainless steel storage unit remember to allow room for soap storage within the unit. If you are not using soap storage then this may not be an issue for you but remember to allow a space large enough for soap storage within your bathroom.
Other types of storage units include tile and membrane. Tile and membrane are both extremely durable, however, they are a little bit more difficult to install. Installing tile and membrane can be challenging and often requires the use of a professional in order to install correctly. If you are on a tight budget and do not feel comfortable with installing these two products on your own you should consider purchasing one of each and installing them in your own home. These products offer a more traditional look to your bathroom and they are available in several different sizes and styles.
One of the most affordable solutions to your storage issues is to purchase mosaic tiles. Mosaic tiles are made from a composite of recycled glass, ceramic, and plastic. These tiles are extremely durable and will keep your soap as well as your shampoo out of the flooring of your shower niche. These tiles come in a number of different sizes and styles and are one of the easiest ways to give your flooring a fresh look without spending a lot of money.
